Refrigerator Not Cooling? Try This Checklist Before You Call for Repair

A refrigerator that's stopped cooling is stressful, especially with a full week of groceries at risk. Before you call for a repair, a few quick checks can sometimes identify a simple cause, or at least give your technician useful information ahead of time.

1. Check the temperature settings

It sounds obvious, but temperature dials get bumped more often than people realize, especially in households with kids. Confirm the fridge is set between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer around 0 degrees.

2. Look at the door seals

Close the door on a piece of paper and try to pull it out. If it slides out easily, the door seal may not be sealing properly, letting warm air in and forcing the compressor to work harder than it should.

3. Clear the vents inside the fridge

Overpacking a refrigerator can block the internal vents that circulate cold air, leading to uneven cooling even when the unit itself is working fine. Make sure nothing is pressed directly against the back wall vents.

4. Clean the condenser coils

Located either behind or underneath the fridge, condenser coils covered in dust and pet hair can't release heat efficiently, which reduces cooling performance. Unplug the unit and gently vacuum the coils if you can access them safely.

5. Check for unusual sounds

Note whether the compressor is running at all. A completely silent fridge that isn't cooling suggests a different issue than one that's running constantly but still warm.

6. Confirm the outlet has power

A tripped breaker or a loose outlet connection is an easy thing to overlook. Try plugging another device into the same outlet to confirm it's supplying power.
